Architectural Technology & Construction Management (Exchange Semester)
Denmark
Term: Fall, Spring
Description:
Interested in doing a project within conversion and renovation of an old property? Take a semester as an exchange student at the Architectural Technology & Construction Management Programme in Aalborg, Denmark About the programme: The Bachelor Degree in Architectural Technology & Construction Management (B.Sc.) is an applied degree of 3½-year full-time study, where the practical base of the programme is further enhanced by the industry related background of the teaching staff, together with the large intake of qualified craftsmen/women amongst the student body. The whole programme set-up is principally project-based. Students undertake the planning and development of projects from idea to supervision of the work. With this in mind, each of the first 6 semesters concentrates on a particular part of the industry and uses this as its theme. The 7th (final) semester is dissertation-based. Exchange Semester Theme: The 5th semester is offered for the exchange studies. It specialises in the conversion and renovation of older buildings. Students are to find their own multi-storey property built before 1930. It must be in need of renovation under an urban renewal programme and have a minimum 2 floors. The property has to be developed for both domestic and commercial uses. In this semester, emphasis is placed on the Outline Proposal, Scheme Design and Detail Design 1 phases of the pre-contract stage. 5th Semester structure The semester is divided into the following five areas: - taught subject related modules within conversion and renovation, - individual integrated project, - group integrated project, - special module: an individually self chosen in depth research topic, - study tour. Methods of teaching & learning: Teaching in this semester is process rather than knowledge oriented. The knowledge base will be via formal lectures, and the process via student independent work/research, in consultation with lecturers. The integrated assignment takes as its base the building phases. The students are to take a lead role using their initiative and the making of independent decisions in order to solve the necessary documentation, and planning built into the project brief. Students will work independently and in groups (2-3 persons) for the analysis, planning and co-ordination of both the planning and execution of the project which will be based on: - the renovation of an elderly multi-storey property, with conversion and extensions of light construction materials and to include a wet room, - a valuation, preliminary report and design, and; - enter into a contract and production schedule with the project supervisor for the consultant/contractor. Special module: a self chosen, industry related topic to be researched and presented for evaluation. Study Tour: students will plan a one week study tour with a professional theme in a country of their choice and submit a written report on its completion. Starting date & Semester duration: End of January or end of August each year. The semester lasts for 20 weeks. Accomplishment & ECTS: Successful completion of the 5th semester gives 30 ECTS points towards the award of Bachelor of Science degree. Assessment: Core Module: presentation of project group work on display boards with individual work in folders/ring binders subject to an oral defense before a panel of lecturers and an external examiner. Special Module: assessment by the individually assigned tutor who gives an oral report. Study tour: tutor-based evaluation of the study tour report. Language of tuition: English.
