Migration and Ethnic Studies
Netherlands
Description:
International migration has become a topical issue in public, political and academic debates both in Europe and elsewhere. The master's programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies covers the different forms, causes and consequences of international migration, and will give particular attention to the impact of globalisation, the regulation of international migration by authorities at different levels and the responses of international migrants to the changing opportunity structure. The programme also addresses issues of immigrant incorporation, assimilation and diversity in various social fields, including the labour market, education, politics and religion. As an overall goal the programme aims to educate future world citizens who have a general knowledge of theories and concepts as they have been developed in the field of migration and ethnic studies, and a thorough knowledge of theories and concepts of (inter)disciplinary approaches to more specific topics. It also aims to develop the student's ability to critically evaluate theories and empirical studies in the field of migration and immigrant incorporation and to engage in (public) debate over topics related to this field. The master's programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies provides the student with a solid theoretical, conceptual, and methodological foundation in the social sciences. It offers students an interdisciplinary approach to the main concerns of our time. The historical and comparative dimensions emphasised in the majority of the courses train the student to analyse issues in society and culture from various perspectives and to put them in their wide-ranging sociological, political and cultural contexts. The combination of empirical studies with theoretical reflection and reading will provide the intellectual tools and abilities that students need to better understand, analyse and cope with the world's contemporary problems and complexities.
Highlights:
The master's programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies is a high standard, interdisciplinary, English-taught programme, including education in an international classroom, instruction in small classes, intensive guidance and coaching by staff and faculty concerning both practical and academic issues and an atmosphere which is determined by enthusiasm for study and cultural, intellectual and social involvement. The ISHSS guarantees housing for one year for all international fee-paying students (both degree and non-degree). Depending on the courses chosen by the student, Migration and Ethnic Studies is part of either the master's in Sociology ('Sociogie') or the master's in Social Anthropology and Sociology of Non-western Societies ('Culturele antropologie en sociologie der niet-westerse samenlevingen'). The quality of these master's programmes has been positively assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally accredited master's degree and the title Master of Science (MSc).
