This master's programme aims to study the ways in which social problems in urban areas are defined and solved, and analyses the roles ascribed to professionals in these processes. It analyses the recent histories of various definitions, solutions, and roles and puts these in a comparative context. The programme focuses on social problems of urban regions in modern welfare states, incidentally including urban regions outside Europe such as the US. It compares the way social problems are defined and tackled and puts these in a historical context. In this master's programme students acquire academic knowledge, professional attitudes, and research skills needed to play an active and / or research role in this field. The programme is competence-based, problem-oriented, and highly interdisciplinary, and links scientific analysis and research to professional practice.

The master's programme in Social Policy and Social Work in Urban Areas is a high standard, interdisciplinary, English-taught programme, including education in an international classroom, instruction in small classes, intensive guidance and coaching by staff and faculty concerning both practical and academic issues and an atmosphere which is determined by enthusiasm for study and cultural, intellectual and social involvement. The ISHSS guarantees housing for one year for all international fee-paying students (both degree and non-degree). Social Policy and Social Work in Urban Areas is part of the master's in Sociology ('Sociologie'). ). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally accredited master's degree and the title Master of Science (MSc).
