Description: The Advanced Diploma of Interior Design prepares you to work in a professional design capacity in interior design and related design industries. You will develop increasingly complex design solutions for architectural interiors and other environments relevant to residential, commercial and public spaces. The program focuses on new, adaptive and restoration techniques and prepares graduates for professional practice through the development of project management skills.

The assessment methods include practical and written assignments, portfolio preparation, critiques, presentations, practical and written examinations, exhibitions, role-play and simulation.

On successful completion, you will graduate with the essential range of creative understanding, industry knowledge and quality skills to actively pursue your design ambitions both locally and overseas.

Study duration is 2 years full time.

Overseas applicants are required to submit an Application for Admission and a portfolio of drawings and designs or complete an entrance exam, in order to assess creative potential and ability to complete the course.

Overseas applicants who apply in Australia are required to submit an Application for Admission and attend an interview at the Whitehouse Institute as well as submit a portfolio or complete an entrance exam.

The following documents are required to be submitted with the Application for Admission:

In addition to the above Whitehouse Institute entry requirements, we recommend you view the Department of Immigration (DIMIA) website or contact your nearest Australian consulate for information on applying for a student visa. To be granted a student visa, you must satisfy the general requirements that are applicable to all student visa applicants as well as provide evidence that satisfies the assessment factors applicable to you.

English Entry Requirements:

If English is not your first language, we need proof of your proficiency in English. The minimum requirements are: 5.5 IELTS
Successful completion of Cambridge FCE
Successful completion of BBES EAP/Bridging
High school English grade good (Scandinavians)

Overseas Student Health Care (OSHC):

Migration regulations require student visa holders to have adequate arrangements in Australia for Health Insurance for the duration of their stay. OSHC is a special health insurance offered by Medibank Private. Prospective students are asked to pay the Whitehouse Institute of Design a premium as part of their enrolment. Exceptions are students from Norway and Sweden, who are not required to have OSHC as under arrangement with the Norwegian and Swedish governments. They are covered by the National Insurance Scheme in Norway and CSN International respectively, which is a world-wide cover for and deemed adequate for the purpose of a student visa.

Agent Commission: 10% of tuition fee (Year 1)

Scholarships: Not available to new students commencing program.
Part scholarships (half term or half semester) may be awarded during the academic year, also the Young Italo-Australians Scholarship is awarded by a panel of independent judges on final year range/designs. The scholarship offered is one year study program for fashion and interior design students.

How to apply:

Prospective students must complete and submit an Application for Admission.
1. When we receive your application, it is checked and registered.
2. Applicants who apply in Australia must attend an interview.
3. Your academic qualifications, portfolio and/or Entrance Exam and English proficiency is assessed.
4. If these meet the entry levels for your choice of course, your application is sent to the Admission Board for approval.
5. We will then write to confirm to you the outcome of your application.

The Whitehouse Institute reserves the right to admit students into the appropriate course.

Stage 1
Whitehouse programs are 'hand's on' from day one. At the start of the program, you will be introduced to the fundamental principles and practices of design. Learning throughout Stage 1 develops from a strong foundation through subjects such as Design Throughout History, Cultural History and Colour Theory and Applications. This is complemented by increasing emphasis on practical outcomes in domestic contexts through subjects that introduce Interior Decoration, Architectural Drafting, Model-making, Perspective Drawing and Textile Design.

Stage 2
In Stage 2 of the program, you will be expected to demonstrate increasing design sophistication and technical competence. The development and refinement of practical skills continues, with students required to demonstrate their architectural, building and construction knowledge in increasingly complex commercial applications, while progressively developing their digital design and drafting skills. The emphasis in the second stage is on professional practice in a variety of contexts - for example, working with others or freelancing. The general business skills you develop in these semesters will complement your professional design abilities. You will also participate in two industry placements where you apply your learning in a practical workplace context, establish and extend your design industry network.

At the successful completion of the program, you will step out to the workforce with an extensive design portfolio, quality skills and industry experience that demonstrate your creative and practical capabilities and professionalism to potential employers, locally and overseas.

Highlights: What is interior design?
Interior design is about creating the special places and shared spaces in which we all live, work and play. It is about designing inhabitable private and public worlds that enrich the human spirit, while also addressing the functional needs of contemporary lifestyles and work patterns in domestic and commercial buildings and their associated environmental settings.

Interior designers deal with built structures, spaces, surfaces, objects and lighting in new and innovative ways. Designing for interiors is about understanding the materials, forms and construction strategies needed to create unique habitats. Designers work closely with clients to capture a desired mood and atmosphere and produce domestic or commercial interiors that reflect the client's taste and needs. Interior designers can also put a unique creative signature upon each project by adopting new and fresh design approaches.

Interior design students work to specific design briefs. They explore creative design opportunities and interior conventions in both two and three dimensions. They use their knowledge of historical precedent to work with design sketches, illustrations, perspective drawings, sections, manual and computer aided architectural drafting, sample boards and models to develop and communicate innovative resolutions to various spatial and functional challenges and budgetary requirements. Always remembering that it is the interior designer's responsibility to surprise, stimulate, delight and satisfy the target audience with the imagination of their integrated design solutions.

Fashion Parade
The Whitehouse Institutes' annual open days and end of year fashion parade are always a success, where media and the public are able to see a selection of designs by our Stage 1, 2 and 3 fashion, interior and styling students. The annual Whitehouse Institute of Design end of year fashion parade shows design ranges from streetwear, evening wear to kids and menswear.

Scholarships are Available. The Academia Italiana arte moda design provides a number of competitive scholarships exclusively to the Whitehouse Institute of Design for graduating students in Fashion Design and Textiles and Interior Design. An industry panel awards part and full scholarships for design excellence, to enable recipients to undertake study in a prestigious one-year program in Italy. Italian scholarship graduates can pursue hotly sought after employment with overseas design companies, or return to Australia to ply their international knowledge and skills.
