Sotheby's Institute of Art: MA in Contemporary Art
England
Description:
For those who wish to study contemporary art in depth, this programme emphasises the artwork itself and how we approach and interpret art from 1960 onwards. Analysis of paintings, sculpture, installations, video art, performance, and conceptual works forms a regular part of the curriculum, as do topical debates on the theoretical and institutional issues in the art world today. To emphasize the practical and vocational aspects of contemporary art, students and faculty work together in group visits to London's museums and galleries and extended study visits to European museums, collections, art fairs, biennials, and galleries. Students are encouraged to develop and discuss their ideas in seminars and in one-on-one tutorials, which are a distinctive aspect of the programme. Graduates benefit from the international perspective of the programme and go on to pursue a variety of fascinating careers in the contemporary art market. In the past, alumni of the Contemporary Art programme in London have opened their own commercial art galleries and project spaces; become gallery directors in New York, London, Paris, and Berlin; become curators for international biennials and art fairs; worked as book editors and art critics; and have been employed in the leading auction houses, contemporary art galleries and public museums worldwide.
