Sotheby's Institute of Art: MA in East Asian Art
England
Description:
The art history of China, Japan and Korea is the focus of this unique programme, which provides art historical instruction in key features and concepts, encouraging students to make cross-cultural links in the art history of East Asia. Teaching is object-based and is organised into three areas of study: ritual and religious art, decorative art and pictorial art. Modern and contemporary Asian art will be covered extensively in the teaching of Semester Two. A distinctive aspect of the programme is the opportunity to examine art objects closely in handling sessions during study visits to major collections in London and Germany. A longer study-trip to East Asia is included in Semester Two. The itinerary for 2010 will include art historical sites and museum collections in Japan. Designed for those who wish to become Asian art specialists, the programme offers insight into the business of the auction house and gallery practices, and into the academic and museum world. Graduates pursue a variety of professional careers in the public and private sectors of the Asian art field.
