Description:
The MA in Contemporary Art offered at Sotheby's Institute of Art - Singapore, is unique in its focus on contemporary Asian art. The fourteen-month programme is designed for those who want to study contemporary art in depth, with a view to working in commercial galleries or public museums, opening their own galleries, or working as auction house specialists, curators, editors or critics. The course is divided into three very different but related semesters. In Semester One, in addition to learning about the development of contemporary art in Europe and North America, a major lecture module is "Contemporary Art in Asia." Students learn about the development of contemporary art in various parts of Asia. In Semester Two, the "Post-colonialism and Globalization" module allows students to study how Asian art came to be an integral part of the international art scene. Studies about the art network and the relationship of art to criticism, theory and literature also form a component of Semester Two. In Semester Three, students research and complete their MA dissertation with the guidance and supervision of faculty. In addition to lectures and seminars, students get a first-hand experience of art centres in Asia through visits to China and Indonesia. Students also spend a week in New York, where, among other things, they learn about how Asian art is perceived and presented.
