B.A. in English with a concentration in Theatre
Italy
Description:
The English program offers a concentration in theatre at the Florence and Tuscania/Rome sites in Italy to help foster student creativity in one of the most enlightening literary environments in the world. Poets, novelists, playwrights, and essayists have flocked to Florence for centuries for aesthetic and intellectual inspiration. The theatre concentration prepares students for careers utilizing their analytical writing and performance skills in the theatre and media business. Students are given the opportunity, after completing the foundation in dramatic literature, to participate in an annual festival north of Rome in Tuscania, where they can experience all aspects of theatre production. This program offers students the opportunity to study international theatre as the written and spoken word combined with movement in the art of performance. The play, either composed in English or translation, is studied for its literary qualities and as a blueprint for production. Students will engage in new and exciting approaches to understanding the dramatic text as both literature and performance. While some courses include scene studies, others may be tied to on-campus productions and ongoing literary festivals throughout Italy.

Lorenzo de' Medici's Mission Statement: Lorenzo de' Medici is committed to helping students realize their own potential, providing a quality education that will enable them to interact successfully with the community worldwide. The School aims to excite and enable students to experience a first class educational and social environment which enlarges their minds, stimulates their talent, and emphasizes the importance of values and the pursuit of knowledge. We also seek to develop real, multi-disciplinary projects in our classes that involve as many of our departments as possible. In this way, we prepare our students to face the actual challenges of their respective fields. Students obtain truly relevant work-related experience by collaborating with colleagues both inside and outside of their specific areas of interest. Then, the results of this collaboration are presented externally for public appreciation and expert evaluation.
