PSTS: Philosophy of Science Technology and Society
Netherlands
Delft,
Eindhoven,
Enschede
Description:
The two-year master of science programme Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS) is a unique international programme intended for students with a background in science or engineering. The aim of PSTS is to understand and evaluate the meaning of science and technology in today's world. The educational programme of the master consists of a one-year core programme which is predominantly philosophical, followed by one out of two broad specialization tracks. The specialization tracks are: (1) the philosophical track Philosophy of Technology; and (2) the multidisciplinary track Science, Technology and Society (STS). The program should be very interesting for students who do not want to pursue a specialized master's degree in the field of science or engineering of their bachelor's program, or have already completed such a degree and are interested in a broader program in which science and technology are related to a larger societal context. PSTS wishes to invite students across the world who are interested in studying the meaning of science and technology in today's world in the Netherlands.
Highlights:
Can we anticipate the future implications of nanotechnology in society? How are information technologies affecting our privacy? Are there ethical limits to genetic fiddling with animals and human beings? How do new devices help to change our behavior and our perceptions of the world? Questions like these are explored in the Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society Master of Science programme. Come and study the meaning of science and technology in today's world! Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS) is a two-year international programme intended for students with (at least) a bachelor's degree in engineering science, natural science, environmental science, life science or information science. Students with a degree in other areas may also apply, provided they can show extensive knowledge of and acquaintance with developments in science or engineering. PSTS has a strong international orientation. All units are taught in English. Students have the opportunity to spend the second year of the programme, or part thereof, at a university other than Twente, e.g. in Lancaster, Stockholm, Aalborg, Lisbon, Manchester, Madrid, Paris, or Atlanta. The great advantage of this international dimension is that it offers students a unique source of knowledge and experience. Students will learn how to improve their English, if not their native language. They will learn about other cultures and societies. International experience tends to foster personal and professional development, and therefore stands out as an attractive element on any curriculum vitae.
