Description:
This BA (Honours) 3 or 4 year programme in fashion design offers a complete university level training to contemporary fashion industry standards through the development of technical design skills and artistic cultural sensitivity. The programme deals with all aspects of the textile - clothing 'system' from a comprehensive knowledge of materials through to applied creativity. The course covers all areas of modern fashion design from idea generation and design development through to pattern cutting, garment construction and contemporary production techniques, including CAD and CAM modules. There are projects on accessories and textile design, fashion business and fashion marketing. From a contemporary cultural perspective, students are introduced to the psychology of fashion and trend forecasting, as well as semiotics and cultural studies. This programme has been developed with and is run in conjunction with the acclaimed NABA institute in Milan, who also work in partnership with renowned industry educators such as Central St. Martins in London. Students who successfully complete the first 2 years in Ireland, and meet the Italian language requirement at the end of their 2 years may complete an optional sandwich year in Milan before completing their final year in Dublin.

Students cannot compensate across subject areas in Cultural Studies. The three year programme in Dublin carries 180 credits. The three year programme with the Sandwich Year carries 240 credits. Project work will typically consist of a one lecture and one hour in small group or individually based input/feedback from tutors and the remaining time in directed and self directed experimentation. Tutors would remain in studio throughout the day to assist with any queries as they arise.
