Marine Science and Management

  Australia
  • New South Wales:
  • Lismore,  Armidale,  Coffs Harbour

Term: Throughout the year
Dates: February - November

Description: Australia's National Marine Science Centre is jointly owned by The University of New England (CRICOS 00003G) and Southern Cross University (CRICOS 01241G) and offers Marine Science degrees in conjunction with these Universities. CRICOS Codes are 061355A, 055754C, 058084A, and 045035F .

The NMSC is an exceptionally well equipped coastal institute at Coffs Harbour based on the East Australian seaboard. The Centre is located adjacent to the Solitary Islands Marine Park which enables students, academics and professional researchers to excel in the study of marine science and management.

Marine Ecological and Biodiversity Research and Monitoring Program Area. The NMSC is involved in a broad range of estuarine, intertidal and sub-tidal research and monitoring projects. Much of this research focuses on how ecological processes structure the unique benthic habitats and communities within the region and how these, in turn, contribute to the high levels of biodiversity found within the Solitary Islands Marine Park.

The NMSC is also involved in long-term monitoring projects to examine the impacts of human activity on sensitive habitats. Many of these projects involve diving and other forms of field work in this biologically diverse and important environment. The research and monitoring projects conducted at the NMSC are often done in conjunction with relevant government agencies, stakeholders and other institutions. The research links with these organisations will enable us to contribute in many ways to current marine research within the area.

Our Mariculture Research Program provides experience in the investigation and development of marine fish and invertebrate culture, live food production and assist in set up of genetic selection experiments working with a high quality seawater system. Mariculture experiments and the husbandry methodologies required for the species involved are in increasing demand in industrialised areas of marine science.

Coffs Harbour is one of only two places in Australia where the Great Dividing Range touches the sea, making a sub tropical micro-coastline while deeper into the interior, the foothills of the Great Dividing Range provide a backdrop of rainforests.

Coffs Harbour enjoys one of the best climates in Australia with an average summer temperature of 23° while daytime winter temperatures rarely fall below 19°C.
