Description: The post graduate Master of Science in Lasers in Dentistry aims to provide the dentist with the highest theoretical and practical know­ledge about lasers in dentistry and their applications in order to en­able the student to use the laser in dental practice with the highest clinical care and the latest accepted laser technology. The main purpose of this education program is to train dental practitioners on the highest level by presenting them laser physics, different laser ty­pes and operation modes of the lasers and their biophysical interac­tion with biological hard and soft tissues in dentistry. The dentists will be educated and trained by the leading professors in their fields.

The program will span a period of two years, in which 10 modules will be held, including the master thesis and the realization of 10 clinical cases. The 10 modules will be taught according to the curriculum standards of RWTH Aachen University and equals to 42 days of pres­ence (420 hours). The student will obtain a total number of 60 credits (ECTS) for participating in the 10 modules. Each module will be held in a defined time section, where the student will be present at the teaching facilities.

The modules each cover an independent topic where the student will gain an extended knowledge in interdisciplinary fields. This know­ledge includes technical parts, physics, basic research as well as clinical applications such as caries therapy, caries diagnostics, en­dodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, oral implantology and low level laser therapy. One module covers ethical, political, economic and marketing aspects. The modules will use a model of blended lear­ning, where beside the time of presence at the teaching facilities an internet-based e-learning environment supports the participant.

Highlights: For each successfully finished module and the master thesis the stu­dent is awarded with credit points. These points refer to the European Credit Transfer System (ETCS) and represent a standardized method of characterizing the student's workload. A total of 60 credit points are given over the program of the 2 years, which are related to 1,800 hours of total workload.

The master thesis is an examination paper, which completes the ed­ucation of this Master of Science. The participants will work on their master thesis during their study. In this conducted research project they present the results in form of a written thesis. The participant has to prove that he or she is capable of solving a problem in a special field in a given time.

The degree "Master of Science in Lasers in Dentistry (M.Sc.)" is awar­ded by the rectorship of RWTH Aachen University. This master degree represents an international recognized university degree. The partici­pant becomes a specialist in dental medicine.

The payment of the social fee of the University is mandatory and it includes full use of short range rail transportation in the whole state of North Rhine-Westphalia and of course in all the bus lines in the city of Aachen, this cost about 193 Euro pro semester.
