Master Program in Nordic Studies - 120 credits
Sweden
Description:
The heritage of the Nordic region is unique. This two-year programme explores Nordic history, politics and culture from a critical perspective. Students will develop their ability to apply regional and comparative perspectives, and acquire an in-depth understanding of the Nordic region. This programme provides advanced level studies for students of Scandinavian studies, history, political science, cultural studies, sociology and other areas, or for students with other disciplinary backgrounds who can demonstrate an ability to develop their potential in this field. The programme is a collaboration between five universities: Linkoping University, Sweden; Aarhus University, Denmark; Abo Akademi, Finland; Tromso University, Norway and the University of Iceland, Rekjavik. Students are expected to spend at least one semester at a university that is not their home university. Students spend their first semester at Linkoping University and study three courses: The Nordic Concept, Nordic Culture and Nordic Models. Lecturers come from all five universities. After the first semester, students choose a specialization: Nordic Culture, Nordic History, Nordic Political Formations or Nordic Medieval Studies. Studies can take place at any of the participating universities if they offer suitable courses. If a student chooses Linkoping University as his/her home university, Nordic History will be the specialization that is offered. The second year consists of further specialization and a degree thesis. This programme will only start if all participating universities have approved the programme and signed the required agreements. Specific requirements: In-depth study of at least 90 credits (3 semesters of full-time study) in the major subject. Relevant subjects are Scandinavian studies, history, social history, cultural history, cultural studies, sociology, political science or related fields within humanities or social sciences. Each applicant must enclose a Letter of Intent written in English explaining why they want to study this programme, and a summary of their degree thesis or project. If applicants hold a degree that does not include a degree thesis or project, their Letter of Intent should describe previous studies and any academic activities that are relevant for the master's programme or the programmes applied for.
