Master Program in Science for Sustainable Development
Sweden
Description:
How can we feed a growing world population and ensure a safe water supply in the face of climate change? How can we produce alternative energy carriers effectively and how can we minimize the destruction of human lives and material caused by natural disasters? This programme explores these and other related questions, and students learn how to develop solutions. The approach is interdisciplinary and addresses how society can meet the needs of present and future generations while substantially reducing poverty and safeguarding the earth's life-support systems. Students become familiar with the key concepts used in policy discussions, and by the global research community when addressing these issues. They will also acquire a critical approach to current challenges for sustainable development from different perspectives, and learn how to use relevant analytical tools. The programme is designed to train students for both research and practical work in international and national agencies, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and international corporations. Students apply for one of the following specializations: - Climate, Energy and Recycling, enrollment code 91005 - Water and Food Security, enrollment code 91006 A common focus lies on how social changes shape the environment, and how environmental changes shape society. The programme is problem-driven, and the goal is to create and deliver knowledge for informed and responsible decision-making. Applicants must have basic IT skills including at least one year's experience using computers as a tool for writing reports and practical computational work. Specific requirements: A relevant background for the programme is natural science, social science, health science, humanities and engineering that relate to environmental, social or economic aspects of sustainable development.
