Mathematics is a very rapidly developing and expanding field which, in addition to its traditional areas of application in the natural sciences, is continually being expanded into new areas of knowledge such as art and social sciences. In particular, the vast advances made in computer technology in the past few years have given rise to new mathematical disciplines. Hence, the aim of the Department of Mathematics is two fold: first to meet the requirements of a modern mathematics education, and second to meet the special requirements of industry, commerce and education. To reach these aims the Department of Mathematics offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science programs which are designed to prepare students for advanced graduate study in mathematics or in related areas of the natural or social sciences or engineering. The programs provide a good background for those who wish to pursue careers in teaching or in research, or in related areas of science, technology, business, or government where mathematics is important. The department offers more than 175 credit/hours of compulsory and elective courses, on both graduate and undergraduate levels in fundamental branches of mathematics including graduation projects.
