Description: James Cook University is Australia's leading tropical research university. We take our name from the eighteenth-century British navigator and explorer Captain James Cook, whose epic voyages contributed to the world of science. The University was proclaimed in Townsville on 20 April 1970, two hundred years after Cook charted the eastern seaboard of Australia, including northern Queensland.

We offer a comprehensive study options - JCU offers a wide range of postgraduate programs to advance your career or change your career direction. We aim to give graduates the qualifications and skills they need for the global workforce. Local industries and professions contribute to course content, and many courses include work placement schemes.

We are also considered as Australia's leading tropical research university. JCU is home to more than 20 specialist centres and institutes, and maintains island, rainforest and outback research stations. More than USD23 million in research funding is received annually. Areas of research focus include: biodiversity, sustainable management of tropical ecosystems, global warming, tropical agriculture, tropical health care in remote communities and cultural diversity.

And JCU has a commitment to making university education accessible and achievable for a wider range of people. Our preparatory courses, entrance schemes and student support programs encourage this objective.

Highlights: JCU's main sites are located in tropical northern Queensland, a remarkable region where over a million visitors come each year to experience two World Heritage listed natural wonders: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics region.

* Cairns
Cairns is the northern-most city in Queensland and has a diverse, cosmopolitan atmosphere. As well as its picturesque location, Cairns has vibrant cultural, shopping and sporting facilities. Shipping, tourism, agriculture and the University are all part of life here. The Esplanade on the waterfront is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists, and features a swimming lagoon, grassy picnic areas, walking tracks, free public barbecues, shops and restaurants.
Cairns is a popular destination for visitors because of the many interesting things to see and do in and around the city. In one day, you can visit both the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics rainforests. Cairns is also a gateway to the crater lakes and National Parks of the Atherton Tableland, the resort towns of Port Douglas and Mission Beach, and the remote and diverse landscapes of Cape York Peninsula and the outback Gulf region.

* Townsville
Located on the Ross River, Townsville is Australia's largest tropical city, and an important commercial and administrative centre and port. Townsville's population is around 150,000 and is growing rapidly. The city's airport, casino, international 5-star Sheraton Hotel, university and cathedral make the city a focal point of the northern Queensland lifestyle. It is proudly an industrial city and serves as an important centre for the surrounding mining, minerals processing, agricultural and pastoral industries. It is also home to a large army and airforce base and is the headquarters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Magnetic Island is just off shore and is an idyllic island suburb and national park for Townsville. It's rocky coves, sheltered beaches and rich variety of wildlife make it a regular weekend retreat.
