In recent years, NUI Galway has been extremely successful in developing a number of internationally renowned inter-disciplinary centres of excellence, in areas including Humanities and Social Sciences, Irish Studies, Film and Digital Media, Human Rights, Biomedical Engineering, Semantic Web Technology, Environmental Science and Marine Science. As a result, today NUI Galway attracts leading academics from around the world, whose expertise help ensure that our teaching programmes continue to respond to the ever changing needs of students, employers and the wider society. The University places great emphasis on the quality of teaching at undergraduate level. Irelands Cultural Heart --> The unique student experience at NUI Galway owes much to our location in the beautiful west of Ireland. The campus itself is situated on a picturesque 250 acre site on the banks of the River Corrib, just a short stroll from the centre of Galway city. Galway is one of Europe's most vibrant cities, with students making up 20% of the population. This youthful energy of the city is reflected in the many internationally renowned literary, arts, and sporting events that are hosted in the city every year. The University's close proximity to Connemara and the Irish-speaking Gaeltact region also provides a uniquely Irish dimension to the campus, one of many factors which appeals greatly to our students from the USA and Canada. Galway also serves as a great base for exploring other parts of Europe, with flights from Galway Airport to Dublin, London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Shannon Airport is a short and regular 90 minute bus trip and offers flights to London, Paris, Barcelona as well as New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Academic Structure --> Today there are over 15,000 students at NUI Galway, taking Bachelor, Masters and PhD level programmes across the University's five Colleges. - College of Arts, Social Sciences, & Celtic Studies - College of Business, Public Policy & Law - College of Engineering & Informatics - College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences - College of Science Research Institutes - Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities & Social Studies - Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) - Environmental Change Institute (ECI) - Martin Ryan Marine Science Institute - National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) - Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) - Centre for Innovation and Structural Change Entry Requirements --> Full Degree (Degree Abroad) Applicants are assessed based on their High School transcripts and their performance in standardised tests (SAT or ACT). Canadian entry requirements can vary, depending on the province the applicant is applying from. For more information, please refer to the University website. NUI Galway also recognises the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma for the purposes of admission. Study Abroad Applicants are normally required to have completed two years of University, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 Entry requirements for Postgraduate vary depending on the chosen programme. Spots Clubs --> The University's prime location on the banks of the River Corrib provides students with excellent opportunities to take part in water sports from rowing to kayaking to canoeing, while the hills of Connemara are easily accessible for those interested in mountaineering, hill-walking and orienteering. The University's new indoor Sports Hall offers squash courts, a swimming pool, gym, badminton, volleyball and basketball courts, table tennis, boxing, karate and aerobics. On-campus outdoor playing fields are available for sports including track and field, hockey and football. Student Societies --> There is no better way to integrate into the social and cultural life of the University than through membership of one of the University's societies. Ever-popular societies include the Chess Society, Choral Society, Drama Society, Film Society, Literary & Debating Society and the International Students Society. Student Volunteering --> All students can volunteer with a variety of community organisations through the ALIVE (A Learning Initiative and the Volunteering Experience) programme, established by the Community Knowledge Initiative to harness, acknowledge and support the contribution that NUI Galway students make by volunteering. Performing Arts --> The Universitys close proximity to Galway city also provides numerous opportunities for students to become involved in the various literary, musical and visual arts activities based in the city. More specifically, the Arts in Action programme, specially designed for students in the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies, includes illustrated performances and lectures in all of the art forms on campus. Student Accommodation --> Students are offered the following accommodation options: - University-approved Student Residences - Private houses and apartments - Hostels (medium term) - Lodgings (living with landlord) The Accommodation Office assists students in finding accommodation and provides advice on accommodation issues.
