Description:
HIV/AIDS prevention education serves as the primary focus of the International Health Program in Cambodia. Health professionals will have the opportunity to work with local NGOs, orphanages, schools and hospitals, where shadowing placements may be available. Those without medical background or experience are welcome to apply and will educate and work with Cambodians who currently lack the resources to obtain the necessary medical knowledge and services. A typical week consists of five to six days of work, with evenings and weekends free to spend time with your community and explore the region. While Cambodian cuisine bears some similarity to Lao, Indian and Thai cuisine, it is truly unique and focuses on the use of local herbs, rather than chillis for flavor.
Highlights:
All participants will receive an initial week of orientation, which includes technical training, Khmer language lessons, and culture and history lessons about Cambodia. In addition, volunteers will have the chance to visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and the Killing Fields at Cheoung Ek. During one of the weekends, participants will go on a three-day visit to Angkor Wat, or a two-day trip to visit the local sites around Phnom Penh.
