Belize
- Other Cities in Belize:
San Ignacio
Term: Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: Aug - Dec, Jan - April
Description:
Archaeology is the study of the origins and development of human culture through the recovery, documentation and analysis of material remains and environmental data. Archaeologists reconstruct past human behavior and cultural complexity by examining prehistoric architecture, artifacts, human remains and landscapes. Galen University in western Belize offers this degree program, accedited through the University of Indianapolis. Located in the heart of the ancient Maya lowlands, Galen students have the unique opportunity to study Archaeology through hands-on learning experiences. A variety of Maya archaeological sites, such as the cities of Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Baking Pot are included in the studies. Students work in all aspects of the archaeological investigations, excavating prehistoric Maya architecture to illustrating artifacts recovered from the sites. In addition to excavating and mapping cultural remains, students also engage in laboratory work and participate in the analysis of ceramic and lithic artifacts plus human and animal remains. Many of these courses are taught by the head of the Belize Department of Archaeology, Dr. Jaime Awe.

Studying in Belize is an experience of a lifetime. There are seven languages spoken in Belize, a country of 300,000. The cultural diversity includes Mestiso, Maya, Mennonite, Chinese and Taiwanese, East Indian, Europeans and North Americans. Belize is a great vacation destination due to the beautiful Carribean on the east coast, protected by the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. 41% of the land in Belize is in reserves or parks, including reef areas. The southern half of the country is a rain forest and the Maya thrived here for thousands of years. Sub-tropical and the only English speaking country in Central America, Belize is a blend like no other. Change your perspective and study in Belize.
