Master Course: Sustainable Urban Design at IED Rome
Italy
Description:
This Master's program serves to prepare professionals to confront the complexity of the contemporary city with principles of action that promote a new ecology of urban development. Specifically, they will be able to promote new relationships between relevant factors: between natural and constructed landscapes, between structures and energy sources, between sites of consumption and production, between public and private spaces, between spaces and inhabitants, and between human beings and other forms of life. If the challenge of the new millennium is to produce architecture and cities capable of functioning in a new manner that sustains life and harmonious cohabitation on our planet, it is necessary to educate a new generation of professionals (designers, architects and engineers) that are able to plan and realize a new universe of objects, architecture and cities that are not only energy efficient, but are also able to generate energy locally and without hazardous waste, as well as engage in exchange in both energy and information networks in a circuit of systemic relationships that positively link natural and constructed environments, spaces and inhabitants, and communities of humans and other living species.
Highlights:
Rome, the location of the Master's, is a city that is symbolized by its public spaces. It is known worldwide for its piazzas like San Pietro (a symbol of religious life), Piazza di Spagna (a magestic stage) and Campo de' Fiori (a market and meeting place). The features of the city are the central consideration of the Master's. Rome will be observed not only for its unique characteristics, but also as a paradigm of the complexity of the contemporary city. The city itself is at the center of the Master's also on the professional level: the Master's is conceived as a meeting place for the most notable Roman professional studios, which are emerging at the international level.
